I recently cut ties with someone I used to care for and have know for over six years. It was one of those extremely complicated and one-sided “relationships.” While nothing was ever directly done to me in malice, and I completely take responsibility for my actions, I was very badly hurt along the way. Being the nice person that I am, I never really removed myself from the equation hoping to keep things cool and remain friends. I didn’t want to be perceived as being a bitch or immature, so I suffered in silence, pretending everything was ok when I wasn’t. This lead to dragging things out for over two years past its expiration date. Unfortunately, this pain and heartache eventually manifested itself into anger and resentment. I came to the realization that the disadvantages in remaining in this friendship outweighed the benefits, and it was not healthy for me to be in it any longer. I know he’s not very happy with me, but I don’t really care. I realize I can’t please everyone, and the person I need to focus on is myself. It’s been very difficult for me, but I know I made the right decision. I’m glad I finally got the courage to let go.
